Did you
know???
Editor:
Sherry Eckerle 1. Golf came from the medieval Dutch “kolf” and later the old Scottish language “golve” which means “club”. In time, the pronunciation evolved and by 16th century, people start to refer to the game as “golf”. 2. The first rules of Golf were written in Edinburgh for the Annual Challenge for the Edinburgh Silver Club in 1744. 3. The Dutch used to play golf or “kolf” in ice using clubs to strike the golf balls and move them from one point to the next. 4. The Scots later dug a hole in the ground as the aim for the ball. 5. There were originally 13 Rules written for Gold. 6. Van Corlandt Golf Course in New York City was the first public golf course in the US. It was opened in 1895 and is still played in until now. 7. The standard size of a golf ball is 4.25 inches in diameter. 8. The golf term “birdie” came from the 19th century American slang “bird” which means “great” or “cool”. Thus, a great shot in golf is said to be a Birdie and has been officially used in the games since 1899. Later on, the expressions “eagle” and “albatross” followed. 9. The term “Bogey” was derived from a 19th century British song where the Bogey Man lives in the shadows and says “I’m the Bogey Man, catch me if you can!”. In golf, Bogey means a score of one over par. 10. Patty Berg was the first winner of the first US Women’s Open in 1946.
