September 11, 2007 – Luncheon at the Cattle Company

Col. Ramsey and/or Lt. Cmdr. James Walter of the 842nd Division who heads the handling of Military Cargo from the Port of Beaumont to be guest speaker.

The mission of the 842nd Transportation Battalion is to synchronize Defense Transportation System surface cargo movements and provide Traffic Management and single Port management for the Department of Defense in peace and crisis.  Plan, coordinate and accomplish movement and documentation of DOD-sponsored cargo through terminals and

facilities within the assigned areas of responsibility.

During Operations Desert shield, Desert Storm, and Desert Farewell, the unit handled over one million tons of cargo, making several ports, including the Port of Beaumont one of the most utilized ports during the entire Gulf War.

With its close proximity to Fort Hood and the Army’s III Corps, the Beaumont unit has served as a key deployment station.  The port deployed more than 30 ships in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm.

The 842nd Battalion took over the military operations in the Port of Beaumont from the 596th transportation group in September 2001.

Art Dominquez of the Woodlands KCS was guest speaker for luncheon on August 14, 2007.

KCS new route cuts transit times by two days with new route between Rosenberg and Victoria, Texas.  This particular stretch includes 70 miles of railway that was originally built in 1881 by the Italians and was often referred to as the “Macroni Line”.  It was purchased by Southern Pacific and acquired by the UP in the UP/SP merger, then sold to KCS Railway.

The reconstruction of this route will: improve train control, increase train velocity and enhance regional economic development.

Reconstruction work began in the Summer of 2007 with expected completion in 2009.  One of the challenges in this rehab project will be the historical structure of the Colorado River Bridge.

Did you know???   Editor: Sherry Eckerle

1.      On a typical day, about 43 million tons of goods, valued at about $29 billion, moved nearly 12 billion ton-miles on the nation’s interconnected transportation network.

2.      Between 1890 and 2002, the number of freight trucks in the U.S. increased from 5.8 million to 7.9 million, and the average distance traveled by commercial trucks increased from 19,000 miles per truck to 27,000 miles per truck.

3.      In 2005, the nation’s freight railroads operated 140,810 miles of rail lines, employed 182,000 people, and reported $47.88 billion in revenue.

4.      Martime transporation carries over three-quarters of the weight of all U.S. International freight.

5.      On an average day, American drivers spend more than 81 minutes behind the wheel.

6.      The longest Interstate highway is I-90, stretching 3,085 miles from Boston, Massachusetts, to Seattle, Washington.

7.      The Nation’s longest road is U.S. 20, 2 3,365 mile route from Boston, Massachusetts, to Newport, Oregon.

8.      Despite being an awe-inspiring sight, super vehicles have some disadvantages: A jumbo jet needs 4,000 gallons of fuel just to take off.  A fully loaded supertanker traveling at normal speed takes twenty minutes to stop.
