![]() Are you aware of the risks carrying credit cards? Well, Pam Trosclair of Mobil Oil Federal Credit Union was gracious enough to left us all know how much at risk we are all of carrying a credit card with an RF chip. These credit cards are primarily used at the gas pump by waving them at a reader that will automatically charge your account. They also allow your personal information to be stolen if these type credit cards are in your wallet with other cards as well. This can happen to you and you are not even aware of the possibility of identity theft.
Another type of identity theft is the random act of computers to find your account numbers. They hit on one that works then the thief proceeds to use your account and make unauthorized charges to your account which you may be responsible for all or at least a portion of these charges.
One method of identity theft that is known throughout our area are the phone calls & e-mails stating they are from your banking institution wanting to know your account number, pin number and other information that can be used. Be assured that these are bogus as no banking institution will call or e-mail requesting this type information. Your pin number is known only to you and this personal information should never be given over the phone or by e-mail.
When shopping on the internet using a credit card, be sure that the site has a lock displayed and usually an information statement showing the site to be secured.
Also, watch for those vendors that share your credit history with other vendors without your knowledge. How do you think your name is passed on to all those credit card companies that are trying to get you to open an account with them? Lastly, when you do get this application and letter, be sure that you completely destroy it so that no one else and retrieve it from disposal and fill it out using your name.
On a more personal note- anyone can join Mobil Oil Federal Credit Union. If you have a credit score of 600+ you should have no problems with their enrollment requirements. Mobil Oil Federal Credit Union has been around since 1989 with 3 branch offices in Beaumont, 1 in Jasper, 1 in Silsbee and 1 in Mid-County. They offer a variety of accounts as well as services. So if you are in market for a personalized banking institution or even a business load, look for Pam at Mobil Oil Federal Credit Union and she can fix you up!
Our thanks to Pam for being our guest speaker at our August luncheon!
