As you can see, a great time was had by all that played golf that day, and what would the outing be like without the threat of rain?

A delicious hamburger dinner followed.  If you’ve never had a Brentwood hamburger by “Chef”, you don’t know what you are missing!

                                                   A Time for Thankfulness

This year many of our families and friends are still trying to put their lives and businesses back together after Hurricane Ike.

While these are trying times, please take a moment to give thanks for the things that are positive in our lives: family, friends, neighbors, and helping hands.

We are all glad the Presidential race is now over and we can resume watching TV again without all the Presidential commercials. We can also look forward to a future that has promised change in America with new leadership.

Most of us are grateful for our health, jobs and the fact that we live in a free democracy where we have a say in our country & it’s leadership.

Many of us are grateful for the freedom to worship.

If you sit down and make a list of things that you are truly thankful for, you would be surprised at how long that list will become very quickly!

Please take the time this year to say thanks, then look around to see if you can lend a helping hand to those in need around us. There are many organizations that continually have a need for volunteers which can use our help, even if it is only a monetary donation, or helping to serve a meal, deliver a basket or clothing. Volunteer!

Then don’t forget that cherished football game after your Thanksgiving meal! A true time of togetherness for your family and friends! (not to mention hopefulness for your favorite team!)

Did you know?                                                                                                                            Editor:  Sherry Eckerle

Here are some interesting facts about Thanksgiving that each of us should know about:

  • The first Thanksgiving celebration can be traced back to the Plymouth Pilgrims in the fall of 1621.
  • The first Thanksgiving feast was held to thank the Lord for sparing the lives of the survivors of the Mayflower, who landed at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620. The survivors included four adult women and almost forty percent children.
  • The Wampanoag chief Massasoit and ninety of his tribesmen were also invited to the first thanksgiving feast. Governor William Bradford invited them for helping the Pilgrims surviving and teaching them the skills of cultivating the land.
  • The celebration in 1621 lasted for three days and included games and food.
  • The president to proclaim the first 'National Day of Thanksgiving' in 1789 was George Washington.
  • Sarah Josepha Hale, a magazine editor, campaigned to make Thanksgiving a National Holiday in 1827 and succeeded.
  • Abraham Lincoln announced Thanksgiving to be national holiday in his proclamation on October 3, 1863.
  • The 'wishbone' of the turkey is used in a good luck ritual on Thanksgiving Day.

'Twas the night of Thanksgiving,
But I just couldn't sleep...
I tried counting backwards,
I tried counting sheep.
The leftovers beckoned...the dark meat and white,
But I fought the temptation with all of my might.
Tossing and turning with anticipation,
The thought of a snack became infatuation.
So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door
And gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.
I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
Stuffing with gravy, green beans and tomatoes.
I felt myself swelling so plump and so round,
Till all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.
I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie
But, I managed to yell as I soared past the trees...
Happy eating to all -- pass the cranberries, please.
