Volume 07 Issue 10, October 2007                                                                                                                S.D.T.C.,  PO Box 20103,   Beaumont, TX  77720

November 13, 2007 Luncheon at the Cattle Company Featuring the Port Arthur Seamen’s Center
Our guest speaker for the November 13, 2007 luncheon will be Fr. Sinclair K. Oubre, J.C.L., who is affiliated with the Port Arthur Seamen’s Center.

The Port Arthur Seamen’s Center was established in 1972, to create a safe haven for seafarers, in response to a number of physical assaults on merchant mariners as they walked back to their ships.

Port Arthur has a proud history of serving the seafarers who visit its docks.  The center is an inter-denominational ministry of Christ’s love and welcome to the men and women of the sea.

Seafarer’s welfare agencies have existed in Port Arthur since the 1930’s.  The first agency was the Seamen’s Church Institute sponsored by St. George Episcopal Church.

From 1943-1948, the United Seamen’s Service took care of merchant seamen at their center located at 201 Procter Street.  For many years, the seafarers who sailed from the docks of Port Arthur were in fact residents of Port Arthur or neighboring cities.  However, as shipping changed and more and more companies chose to use foreign flag vessels, the U.S. Flag fleet declined.

In the year 2000, there were 1,873 ships piloted through our waterways, translating to 46,825 seafarers. In the year 2006.

There were 2200 ships which increased the seafarers to 50,600 from around the world coming to our area ports.

In 2001, the Board of Directors decided to build a new Center. With the new wind storm requirements, the construction is expected to cost One Million Dollars. Phase I, the outer shell of the building, will be completed in about 2 weeks.

Currently they are still seeking funding of approx. $300,000 to complete the construction.

The success of this project will enable more seafarers to be served. It will enable the volunteers to have space in which to work without cramping the seafarers. Storage space will be available for Christmas Gift Boxes, filler items, sports equipment, books, etc.

A meeting room will be available for functions and groups to rent for various activities. Best of all, the New Center will have a chapel for individual or group worship.

Volunteers are always welcomed at the center. For more information, please contact, Doreen M. Badeaux at the Seamen’s Center. Ph (409) 985-4545.

Did you know?                                                                                                                                                                            Editor:  Larry Kelley
In a 100-year period, a water molecule spends 98 years in the ocean, 20 months as ice, about 2 weeks in lakes and rivers, and less than a week in the atmosphere.

The overall amount of water on our planet has remained the same for two billion years.

Water regulates the earth's temperature. (Editor’s note: Water does not contain CO)

Frozen water is 9% lighter than water, which is why ice floats on water.

Human brains are 75% water.

75% of a chicken is water.
