October 14, 2008 Fall Golf Outing at The Palms – Cancelled due to Hurricane Ike Rescheduled for November 11, 2008 at Brentwood Country Club
Due to the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Ike for so many of our businesses and homes, the Fall Golf Outing for the SDTC has been cancelled. Our golf committee has selected Brentwood for a November 11, 2008 outing. Plans are in the beginning stages. Once the plans are finalized, the information will be passed on to each of our members. We appreciate your patience as we get this event re-scheduled. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost their homes and businesses throughout the area.

Our guest speaker, Deral Segler of Bridge City was very informative on safe driving. A true man of patience in dealing with those of us in the defensive driving schools for driving outside of the law!
The definition for defensive driving is: a collision which is unavoidable with multiple causes, or an accident, “mishap” where there is a definite cause where someone broke the law. The major cause is usually inattentiveness, rubber necking and speed.
A fatality happens every 12 minutes, an injury every 11 seconds, property damage every 7 seconds and law is called every 5 seconds. Drivers with a CDL cannot take defensive driving as they are supposed to be professional drivers 100% of the time.

| Hurricane Ike Hits Area Businesses & Homes | ||
|
Bridge City Pizza Hut – Hurricane Ike September 19, 2008
Evacuation was mandatory for the counties of: Jefferson, Orange, Newton, Jasper & Hardin.
The devastation is great. The City of Bridge City has over 99% of homes damaged/destroyed and many without flood insurance, as well as our neighbors in Bolivar Peninsula and Galveston.

Hurricane Ike touches the lives of all of us in some way. Maybe it was a family member’s home or business that was damaged or destroyed. From Galveston to Lake Charles the debris turns brown from the salt water, and folks are out in groves doing cleanup after the storm. Many homes were described as “looks like a bomb went off inside”. This is week number 3 and some establishments have re-opened, but for certain, the area looks different and will take a while to rebuild. Others have opted to mover from the area all together. As people get back to normal and find ways to keep going, our prayers continue for those in need. Several requests have been made in the form of assistance to our membership. If you are able to help, please let us know so that we can get you in contact with those persons asking for assistance. |
Many thanks to Clear Water Radio and Al Caldwell for the continuous updates on information for our communities. They were truly a god-send for us during this time. They passed on information as it was made available to help those who were able to listen to a radio. |
